Kids' Sewing Class, Apron, Starts 10/13/08 - Beginner

Enroll your child or tween in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" sewing class. In this course he or she will learn to sew and create an apron along the way. [The apron will be full length for girls, garcon style for boys.] You will:

• Choose your Marimekko fabric (included in the enrollment fee)
• Learn to read a pattern and take your measurements
• Learn to operate a sewing machine
• Layout and cut your pattern and fabric
• Sew and complete your apron

AM Sewing Class, Custom Skirt, Starts 10/13/08 - Beginner

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" sewing class. In this course you will create an elastic waist skirt -- and this is "not-your-mother's elastic skirt! You will:

• Learn to read a pattern and take your measurements

• Sew and complete your skirt

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" quilting class. In this course you'll spend 4 sessions learning the essentials for making a quilt. At the end of the four sessions, you'll walk away with a completed quilt. The quilting kit is included in the course fee; other basic supplies (e.g., thread, fusible batting, muslin, and backing) will be available for purchase. Instructor: Pamela Denning. Beginner. $99

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" quilting class.  In this two session course you'll create a double 4 patch quilted pillow or wall block as well as learn machine applique. Enroll your child or tween in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" sewing class. In this follow-on course for children who have completed Beginner I (or children with rudimentary beginner skills), he or she will learn sewing skills and create a picture pillow. They will:

• Learn more about operating a sewing machine
• Layout and cut their pattern and fabric
• Sew and complete their project

Trick-or-Treat Craft, 10/23/08

Build a little extra fun into this year's Halloween by having your child participate in our annual Halloween Craft Project. This year, kids 6 - 10 years old will create trick-or-treat bags from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm on 10/23/08. This is an in-store event for the greater Washington, DC community and will be held in the Marimekko Washington, DC store in Silver Spring, Maryland. Instructor: Karen Harvey. All Levels. $34

Quilting Class, Starts 10/26/08 - Intermediate

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" quilting class. In this 2 session class you will create a free motion quilted bag with wooden handles and 2 small interior pockets.

• First session: Cut out bag, lining, and batting; layer and free motion quilt
• Second session: assemble bag with lining and handles
• Please arrive early to the first session to choose your fabric (included in the course fee)

Students may bring their supplies, which include invisible thread, thread to match fabric, a pair of wooden handles with metal loops on the ends, and fusible, thin batting or they may purchase them in the store. Instructor: Pamela Denning. Intermediate. $99

2 sessions, Sundays, 2 - 4pm, 10/26 - 11/01/08

Kids' Class, Introduction to Drawing, Starts 10/25/08

Children ages 6 - 10 will be introduced to the fundamentals of art and drawing -- line, shape, and color-- through the exploration of topics such as nature, architecture, music, and storytelling. Each session will feature a hands-on activity that will enable your child to practice drawing skills while increasing art appreciation. Each student will need to bring a sketchbook as well as lead and colored pencil sets. $5 material fee to cover all other supplies due to the instructor at class. The store will provide all other needed supplies. Instructor: Maria Marable-Bunch. Beginner. $89

4 sessions, Saturdays, 10 - 11 am, 10/25 - 11/15

Introduction to Slipcovers, Starts 10/27/08 - Intermediate/Advanced

Enroll in our instructor-lead "You Can Make It®" slipcover class. In this class you will cover a pillow, a cushion, an ottoman, or a dining or armless chair. You will:

• Prep marking and cutting for the finished cover
• Make and apply welt cord
• Make kick pleat skirts
• Insert zippers and assemble your piece

Each student will need to bring or purchase 10 yards of medium weight cotton fabric -- no velvet, upholstery, or satin fabrics please -- ranging from 48 to 54 inches wide. Prerequisites: Ability to sew a straight seam and understand grain lines. Instructor: Yvetta Drayton. Intermediate/Advanced. $139

Introduction to Knitting, Starts 10/30/08 - Beginner

In this course students will learn basic knitting skills, including

• Casting on using the knit cast-on method
• The basic knit stitch
• The difference between the knit and purl stitch
• How to cast off (or finish) stitches

Students will also learn how to determine the right and wrong side of knitting, understand gauge, and how to read the yarn label. Several stitch designs that use the knit and purl stitch will also be covered. Students will be encourage to begin a simple project like a garter (all knit) stitch scarf. Students will need to bring size 8 knitting needles and light colored worsted weight yarn to the first class. Quilting Class, Holiday Stocking, Starts 11/09/08 - Beginner

Come to this one session class to make your own Marimekko Christmas stocking with a HoHoHo cuff. Bring your own invisible thread, white thread, and batting for the stocking and cuff or purchase these items in-store. Instructor: Pamela Denning. Beginner. $29

1 session, Sunday, 2 - 4 pm, 11/09

Stained Glass Notebook Gift Set, Starts 11/11/08 - Beginner

Create a hand-made (and beautiful) gift set this season.  Participants will design and create "stained glass" notebooks, floral pens, and their own gift packaging. [The stained glass and pens will be created using paper, fabric, and foam board, and flowers, and ribbon.] $5 material fee due to instructor in class. Ages 8 - 12. Instructor: Karen Harvey. 3 sessions, Tuesdays, 4 - 5:30 pm, 11/11 - 11/25

Knitting In The Round, Starts 11/20/08 - Beginner II

In this class, students will learn knitting in the round using both circular and double pointed needles, simple shaping, how to decrease stitches, and basic finishing techniques. At the end of this class, students will have knit a baby hat. [The pattern can also be translated to larger sizes if desired, but the project will not be completed at class end.] Students will need to bring 2 sets of size 6 16 inch circular knitting needles, one ball of yarn worsted weight yarn, and a yarn darning needle. Green Knitting, Starts 12/04/08 - Advanced Beginner

Green your crafting life on up!  Tired of filling landfills?  Looking for a thoughtful gift for a “green” friend? Knitted dishcloths not only make wonderful gifts, but are an attractive way to reduce the use of paper towels and sponges. Going green was never so easy, so gratifying, or so much fun!  Students will select from several patterns a dishcloth they wish to knit. Needed supplies include 1 ball of 100% cotton yarn and knitting needles (see the yarn label for suggested needle size).  Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable with the basic knit stitch.  Enrollment limited to six students.
